Radio waves bounced into polar craters on the moon
1994: Clementine probe (US): It bounced radio waves into dark craters at the moon's poles and detected strong echoes that could have been produced by thick sheets of ice (shown in blue).

NASA's LCROSS mission is the latest in a series of attempts to divine water on the moon – some have hinted that our nearest neighbour may be something of a watery oasis, while others suggest that view is just a mirage.
