The Orion constellation above the Alborz Mountains in Iran
The constellation Orion (upper right) pierces the night sky above the Alborz Mountains in northern Iran. The bright stream of light at lower left comes from cars travelling the highway between Tehran and the Caspian Sea.
Iranian photographer Babak Tafreshi has won the 2009 Lennart Nilsson scientific photography prize. According to the award panel, his images "reclaim a night sky that most modern people have lost" – see some of them here.
