Heat-sensitive cameras can be placed around shopping malls, department stores or large supermarkets, and film where people tend to move and congregate. The data can then be processed to show trends. The map shows which are the most popular places in a store, and the way people move around. It can be used to place promotions or particular services in the most obvious or convenient place, or could be used to influence the customer’s movement and help to plan the layout of shops.
SAP’s Future Retail Centre, near Zurich, Switzerland, houses a range of new technologies that could change the way we shop in years to come. Many of the technologies are already being trialled by retailers and the company uses its research labs in Switzerland to showcase and test its ideas.
