Spacecraft crash so astronomers can search for water in debris

2009 (Oct): LCROSS (US): Two spacecraft collided with a crater on the moon's south pole on 9 October. Astronomers will search for signs of water in any debris ejected, though early observations do not show a visible debris plume.

NASA's LCROSS mission is the latest in a series of attempts to divine water on the moon – some have hinted that our nearest neighbour may be something of a watery oasis, while others suggest that view is just a mirage.
