2008 IT year in pictures: CERN - Large Hadron Collider starts with a bang
As the CERN big bang experiment went live on 10 August, we breathed a sigh of relief that the world didn’t end. The Swiss lab’s LHC, the world’s biggest particle accelerator, hurls subatomic particles around a 27km circular tunnel before crashing them into each other, with the aim of discovering the mechanics of the universe. The project uses cutting edge technologies including: grid computing, global networking and advanced databases. But a major helium leak forced the LHC to be shut down till summer 2009.
