SOFTWARE ENGINEER

We are looking for a software engineer to work in the Universal Protein Resource (UniProt).

The software engineer will be responsible for the development and enhancement of the automatic annotation system based on modern software engineering methodologies and techniques.

The functional annotation of a large collection of predicted sequences in the protein sequence databases is essential in modern biology. The UniProt group at the EBI has developed an automatic annotation system based on computational methods and programmatic pipelines that provides initial automatic functional annotation to a large number of protein sequences in the UniProt Knowledgebase.

UniProt provides a central resource on protein information and a solid set of services and computational analysis of protein data. UniProt is produced by the UniProt Consortium – a collaboration between the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), the Protein Information Resource (PIR) and the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB).

The EBI, located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK, is a global centre for biological data hosting the very large sequence, structure and expression data resources in Europe.

The ideal software engineer will have a degree in computer science and/or bioinformatics and proven working experience programming with Java as well as being well acquainted with Unix and Linux. S/he will have a solid understanding in distributed programming, experience in bioinformatics and knowledge in Java open source frameworks, such as Spring and Lucene, would be beneficial.

The software engineer must be able to work independently as well as in a team of software developers and biologists. S/he will be a good communicator and enjoy working in a stimulating international environment.

An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
