There is a lot more to a private cloud than simply implementing Hyper-V or VMware, according to Forrester analyst John Rakowksi.
"A private cloud is not just advanced virtualisation," he says.
He urges CIOs to consider the private cloud as a very standardised, autonomous environment, with self service and possibly a charge-back mechanism to enable business users to pay for what they use.
"Saving money is not the main driver for cloud adoption," he adds. Its main benefit is to make IT more agile and efficient, and more responsive to the needs of the business.
To make a private cloud succeed within a business Rakowski urges CIOs to begin with a small project and incentivise developers to use it, especially given that many would be familiar with the Amazon public cloud.
