Forrester analyst and advisor John Rakowski believes datacentre computing is now a virtualisation-first strategy. He says, "Initially, over the last couple of years CIOs have been looking for cost savings to support the business, but this is now starting to change." The industry talks about cloud computing and private clouds. Rakowski sees virtualisation as the enabler, which allows organisations to become more agile - covering server, storage and network virtualisaton.
Of the main products, Rakowski says VMware is well-established but Microsoft's Hyper-V 3 stacks very highly against VMware 5. "The choice now becomes cost of agility, and Hyper-V looks like it will be slightly cheaper than VMware, but VMware has a strong ecosystem for agile infrastructure," he adds.
