Really interesting discussion. Chris seems to be getting to the same challenges, with similar solutions that I encountered in consumer facing IoT systems. I wonder if the details are similar - I'd certainly value comparing notes on practical approaches.

One might hope that the engineering specifications and implementations are better controlled in automotive engineering parts, but, given the poor visibility of the behaviours of VW's engine management behaviours, I doubt it.
