350 million wireless e-mail business users by 2010, says Gartner

There will be 350 million business and consumer users of wireless e-mail worldwide by 2010, said analyst Gartner.

Currently, there are only 20 million business users of wireless e-mail globally, said the analyst, but the overall business and consumer total will spiral as such services become commoditised.

The analyst warned that firms must accept that employees will find it easier to set up their own independent access to business e-mail, so organisations had to move with the times and set up wider and more secure corporate access.

But an earlier Gartner prediction estimated that only 50% of large enterprises would have corporate-wide mobile usage polices by 2010.

Gartner said 350 million wireless e-mail accounts equated to 20% of all e-mail accounts being wirelessly enabled. Gartner expects wireless e-mail to reach commodity status by 2012.
