As thousands of Java developers gathered in San Francisco, California, this week for the Sun Microsystems Java One conference, UK users questioned the company's claims that Java will remain a portable programming standard for the Internet.

A Computer Weekly/Harvey Nash Big Question poll found that 40% of respondents expected Java to fracture as Unix did in the 1970s and 1980s, while only 26% expected it to remain intact.
