
According to the results of AMR Research’s spending survey, the
upgrade cycle is slowing down. For those pursuing upgrades, roughly
half of the decisions are due to companies’ desire for new
functionality, which is exactly the opposite of where most
application vendors are investing today, namely, integration
capabilities and technology upgrades.
Status quo technology upgrades are dead. Maintenance is one of
the highest margin areas for vendors, so they try to play the
support card to move customers to their newest releases.
Companies are learning that these are often empty threats and
should delay upgrade decisions based on several factors.
