The House of Commons Public Accounts Committee ripped into public
sector Web sites earlier this month, accusing the Government of
squandering its early lead in the field.
Anyone wanting to do a quick trawl of what is on offer can find
useful links from the Society of IT Management Web site and the Local Government
Association's site.
Another option is to try the Local Government Web
Site Index, set up by Charles Sale, head of IT
at Waveney District Council.
The project began after Sale got frustrated when trying to
compare his own council's Web site to that of other councils. It
has developed from a simple set of Web links to an international
index with an indication of the quality of various sites.
"I set out to achieve a fast-loading site that only contained
valid links and gave visitors a hint of how good various councils'
sites actually are," Sale told Computer Weekly.
