The latest proposals enhance Web services functionality but more work is needed before users can start builiding real world Web services.

Last month Microsoft and IBM unveiled a proposed Web services specification called Business Process Execution Language for Web Services (BPEL4WS). It is designed to ensure that business processes within one organisation can be mapped on to those in a business partner's, allowing users to develop co-ordinated services.
