One ITAM vendor, Tangram, has been helping the Marriott hotel destroyed in the 11 September terrorist attacks recover time-critical data on a server restored from backup to discover who had checked in and out. Since the original server that housed the data was destroyed during the terrorist attack, an identical server had to be configured to restore the backup.
Using the information that was discovered by the inventory tool, the hotel knew the exact configuration details of the server that was destroyed, enabling it to construct an identical machine. As a result, it was able to restore the necessary data and gain access to the critical information it needed.
