Case study: Armari Installs LSI™ 6Gb/s SATA+SAS RAID Controller Cards

As a leading specialist manufacturer and integrator of high-performance computer systems and solutions for video, Armari prides itself on delivering best-in-class products to universities, commercial companies, architects, animators, filmmakers, and high-end users.

In 2008, one of the company’s existing digital media customers needed a solution that would deliver greater bandwidth and throughput for uncompressed high-definition (HD) video. The current system, which used a SATA II controller, wasn’t able to provide the up to six simultaneous streams the customer wanted. Uncompressed 10-bit 1080i video at 60 frames per second requires sustained transfer rates of between 150 to 170MB/s per stream, which was not possible using the existing technology.

During a rigorous evaluation, Armari came upon a review of the LSI 6Gb/s MegaRAID® technology. A product description on the review site Tom’s Hardware was impressive, documenting throughput of up to 3,005MB/s using just a single eight-port controller connected to 24 SAS hard drives through a SAS expander — even better than the customer needed.
