Tesco.com has deployed software that frees IT staff from having to correct data manually.

The Sonetto product from Ivis is being deployed in order to present product data on the Tesco website in a consistent way.

The challenge for the retailer was that information supplied by manufacturers and producers was not in a format that allowed customers to make easy comparisons on the Tesco.com website.

With Sonetto, a data filter formats information feeds from producers into XML, which can be read by Tesco.com's e-commerce engine. The software also allows Tesco.com to build associations between products to provide recommendations to customers.

Jon Higgins, Tesco.com's head of e-commerce development, said the IT department should not be responsible for updating this information. As well as being time-consuming, he said staff from the commercial side of the business were in a better position to make changes than IT staff. Sonetto allows them to do so without the intervention of IT specialists.
