"It is a fairly predictable play. Microsoft Works was obviously proving too costly," said IDC research manager Andy Brown. However, while the move makes sense from the point of view of both Sun and Sony it is unlikely to turn the heads of many users, said Brown.
Sun said it is planning to creep into the enterprise desktop space by first attracting consumers. But Brown is not convinced.
"I still do not think that your average It manager would be happy to implement Star Office on a widespread basis," he said.
