Are you ready to use your IT expertise to help your local community? Have you been turned off considering volunteering because you didn't know how to be effective? Well, now is the time to start thinking again, writes John Riley

A new campaign called IT4Communities, launched recently, aims to put some backbone into the process of volunteering by setting up a national Web site to co-ordinate and advise all initiatives.

Several heavyweight professional bodies are involved, from the suppliers organisation Intellect, to the British Computer Society, Business in the Community, Citizens Online and Computer Weekly, to help to co-ordinate initiatives and both build and spread best-practice advice.

Whether you wish to contribute yourself, or know colleagues who do, or if you are an IT manager who wants to advise your staff how they can best contribute, we would like to help you to channel your interest.

Computer Weekly strongly supports the Worshipful Company of Technologists' initiative and we want to gauge the interest of the IT user community in participating in events in the coming months.

So if you are at all interested in helping to give back constructively and effectively to your local community please contact us by e-mailing [email protected] with subject header: "IT4Communities" and we will help to facilitate your interest where it can be deployed most constructively.
