Host-to-Web integration specialist WRQ will next week unveil WRQ Verastream Host Integrator 5.0, which is designed to slash development times and help enterprises exploit existing legacy assets.

The primary feature in 5.0, called Web Builder, is designed to automate critical pieces of the process for extending terminal-based legacy applications to Web-based applications, according to Prasantha Jayakody, market manager at WRQ.

Web Builder can be deployed in a number of ways, from generating "as-is" representations of green-screen legacy apps into a browser interface - which involves no coding - to both mid-range and highly complicated integrations.

Such complex functionality includes the ability to componentise portions of legacy applications and then regenerate them automatically via the Web Builder tool in the form of JavaBeans or Web services.

"The goal was one tool that covers the spectrum of complexity," said Jayakody, who estimated that Version 5.0 could help cut down some aspects of integration coding work by 20% per project.

The ability to provide automatic component generation also helps to bridge the gap between the work of the integration developer on the back end and the Web developer on the front end.

For example, with Web Builder creating the Web pages, integration developers no longer have to spend time with Web developers testing the scripting of legacy components before deployment. That can be done on the back end now, Jayakody said.

On the front end, the Web developer does not have to figure out the appropriate procedure calls needed to reach necessary legacy data when designing the new Web application, he added.

Verastream Host Integrator 5.0 will be available for a range of host types, including OS/390, AS/400, Unix, HP e3000, and OpenVMS.
