Storage virtualisation specialist Virsto has developed a version of its software for VMware, which it claims will radically reduce the cost of server hardware.
Analyst firm Gartner estimates that for every dollar spent on virtualisation, $5 is spent on storage.
Virsto provides storage virtualisation, which the company says can reduce the storage footprint required by hypervisors. The product was previously available for Microsoft Hyper-V, but it is now on VMware.
It claims the product increases storage utilisation by 90% by using a logging architecture, which fools the virtual machine into thinking it is fully provisioned with storage.
Virsto for VDI is priced at £1,750 per host.
Virsto for VDI, vSphere Edition, is now in beta, with general availability planned for the fourth quarter 2011. Virsto for VDI, Hyper-V Edition, is available now.
