Lycos was offline for around seven hours yesterday after construction workers damaged the systems of its hosting company Savvis.
Lycos e-mail and search engine customers were left stranded as Lycos’ back-up systems are also supported by Savvis.
The site returned to normal on Tuesday afternoon after the outage at Savvis.
A number of other Savvis customers were affected by the outage, although Savvis has not provided details or confirmed the exact cause of the outage.
Lycos said on its website, “Due to issues affecting our hosting provider, Lycos experienced a network outage for roughly seven hours on Tuesday 2 January.
“We apologise for the interruption in service to our Tripod, Angelfire and Lycos Network and Mail users, and for any inconvenience this may have caused.”
Savvis recently announced that it would be opening four new datacentres in the US by the end of the year to support customers’ hosted services.
