Cisco has introduced a family of routers and switches that can directly process protocols used by applications.

The application-oriented networking (AON) routers will take on some of the functionality currently supplied by the application server. This should boost the reliability and performance of the application servers.

Larry Velez, senior analyst at Forrester Research, said, "We believe AON will accelerate further web service adoption."

Neil Macehiter, partner at analyst Macehiter Ward-Dutton, said, "The technology has the potential to shake up the way that application infrastructure is provided."

Cisco said its AON products would be able to read and reconstruct inter-application messages without any effect on messaging throughput. AON products also promise to speed up transaction processing and improve message security.
