America Online has hired John McKinley, former chief technology officer at Merrill Lynch and GE Capital, to head its technologies division.
McKinley will direct AOL's technological agenda as it moves into areas such as broadband, wireless and premium services.
He will report to AOL vice-chairman Joe Ripp and will oversee teams in charge of product engineering, network infrastructure, data centres, internal business systems and computing.
"John McKinley is one of the business world's most respected technology leaders, and we are very pleased that he is joining AOL," Ripp said.
"John has an extraordinary reputation as a strategic thinker and has an intuitive grasp for how new and existing technologies can address the needs of the consumer."
