A new device promises to take interactive Web sites to the next level and drive Jilly Goolden into a frenzy by allowing wine buffs to smell wines via the Internet.

The gadget, which attaches to a PC, has been developed for the Burgundy Wine Professionals' Association (BWPA). It will enable visitors to the BWPA Web site to smell burning vine shoots or the odour of a musty cellar, but hopefully not Oz Clarke's breath.

Downtime can see some tremendous opportunities for this technology. Health and beauty retailers, fresh food companies just don't tell the guys at www.deoxy.org/, whose site makes the unsavoury assertion, "Deodorants are unnecessary - body smells remind us we are animals."
