There were some surprises regarding the performance of financial web sites since we last focused on this area in December 1999.
The Coutts website suffered the biggest decline in performance. Damian Richardson, head of e-commerce, said: "We basically updated the server because it was too old to cope with our future requirements."
Coutts shares a server with Natwest, whose site was re-launched and saw a "dramatic increase in visitors in January".
Generally among the financial websites tested, average speed is down to 1.45s compared with 2.65s previously. Egg seems to be sorting out the reliability of its site since last time. Barclays and Legal and General have had slight decreases in reliability.
