Businesses still need to be convinced of the benefits of converged communications networks, even though most firms are working towards them, according to a survey by research company Winmark.

The survey of 150 companies employing more than 500 staff, sponsored by networking supplier Omnetica, found that 94% of firms have implemented some form of converged communications technology.

The survey looked at how many companies were using the network technologies linked to eight areas that Omnetica views as key to moving towards the goal of all enterprise voice, data and video traffic being carried over a single, IP-based network.

Despite the high percentage of companies using it, the survey found that more than 40% of respondents admitted to not knowing the full business benefits of convergence technology.

Even though there are potential cost and performance advantages, the survey found that the main barriers to further adoption of convergence, as far as board members were concerned, were "cost implications" and a "lack of identifiable business benefit".
