Enterprise management software company BMC Software has acquired web access provider OpenNetwork in an attempt to offer users web-based identity management.

BMC said the $18m (£10m) acquisition would expand its identity management product suite to include browser-based authentication and authorisation.

This will enable BMC customers to securely manage access to web-based applications across multiple business environments.

OpenNetwork also brings web single sign-on and federated identity management capabilities to BMC, enabling secure and more efficient e-commerce solutions for customers, according to BMC.

Phil Schacter, an analyst at the Burton Group, said, "Enterprise buyers now favour holistic, integrated identity and access management solutions that enable broad coverage of authentication, authorisation and user management."
