Businesses are failing to understand thesecurity risk of employees using iPhones, a survey
has revealed.
Sixty five per cent of senior IT directors polled at 200 UK
medium to large firms admitted authorised users could access
company data through the iPhone.
A similar proportion (64%) said they had not taken any steps to
secure company data against this threat, the Vanson Bourne survey
revealed.
The survey also revealed that 40% of UK businesses allow staff
to download company data onto portable storage devices without any
security provision.
The findings are surprising, considering the high number of
portable memory devices used at these firms, said Sacha Chahrvin,
managing director at security firm DeviceLock.
Securing portable media such as USB sticks has been made
mandatory in government departments after several high-profile
data breaches.
The Government
Connect Secure Extranet (GCSX) requires local authorities to
meet stringent security standards concerning storing data on
portable media.
Local authority IT departments need to
ensure a full audit trail of their use and ensuring that the
storage media is tamper proof.
