Last week UK research group the National Computing Centre said UK businesses could gain much from the use of open source software. However, it also said finding, implementing and maintaining open source systems currently carries too great a business risk.

The NCC wants to be the fairy godmother of the open source movement in the UK, to co-ordinate and disseminate knowledge about free software products. This can only be a good move. It will help the open source movement to shed the beard-and-sandals image that has held it back as a serious business proposition. And even if you are not going to implement the software yourself, it will make proprietary software suppliers sharpen their focus on delivering value for money.
