Over two-thirds of IT managers believe that the Government should scrap telecoms watchdog Oftel and consider tougher means to regulate telecoms suppliers.

Oftel has been criticised in recent weeks for failing to force British Telecom to allow rivals access to its local loop, which would allow them to offer broadband services across the UK. Affordable high-bandwidth Internet connections are vital to boost e-commerce.

One of the respondents to this week's Computer Weekly/Harvey Nash Big Question poll said, "Oftel has time and again shown itself to be a toothless wonder and more direct action is now required."

Another said, "Service delivery should be regulated and tough compensation should be awarded for deadlines not being met by the regulator."
