Research has revealed that just over half of all UK businesses are expecting to increase their spend on online activities in the next 12 months.

The 2003 Continental Research report, which surveyed 500 UK firms, also found that nearly one in five companies expected this increase to be “considerable”.

Medium-sized businesses are driving the increased spending on e-business, with a quarter expecting online activity to increase a lot in the next year.

Forty-two per cent of the businesses surveyed had their own website.

Efforts by the banking community to encourage their business customers to use online services is driving e-business growth. Last year, just under a quarter of UK businesses were carrying out some type of banking activity online, but this year’s survey found this has risen significantly to around 36%.

Other services businesses are, increasingly, using online include travel and ordering of goods, such as software and raw materials, the report found.
