Supermarket chain Sainsbury's has hired Google's director for UK and Ireland to join its executive team.

Matt Brittin joined the retailer's top board last week, as a non-executive director. According to Sainsbury's chairman David Tyler, the firm had been looking for someone who would complement the skills and experience of its existing team.

Earlier this month, Sainsbury's reported its best-ever Christmas, with "record orders" for groceries on its website and the non-food online business showing "continued improvement."

Tyler added that he was certain that Brittin "will contribute widely" to the retailer's future growth aspirations.

Brittin has been in post at the internet giant for just over four years. Previously, he served as director of strategy and digital at Trinity Mirror, where he worked for three years.
