Royal Bank of Scotland has hired a new CIO. Former Wachovia Bank IT boss Ian Alderton has joined the corporate division of the beleaguered financial services giant this month.

Alderton joined as chief information officer (CIO) at a time of disquiet: IT staff at the part-nationalised bank told Computer Weekly earlier this year that morale had reached rock-bottom as jobs vanish overseas.
After leaving Wachovia, Alderton, a veteran in financial services IT, has worked on assignments as an interim CIO at companies in the sector in the past few months.
The new RBS IT chief describes himself as a "highly inspirational, decisive and commercially focused international CIO," with an "outstanding track record of strategic leadership and visionary expertise [and] managing complex business change to support aggressive business expansion into new markets and geographies.
