Manufacturing ERP specialist SSA Global Technologies is to bundle its recently-developed lean manufacturing component into version 8.0 of its BPCS ERP suite, due in May, writes Antony Adshead.

The Lean Manufacturing Process (LMP) code was developed during an implementation for Invensys' control systems division. The software models lean manufacturing practice, which aims to improve productivity by simplifying each step of production by eliminating unnecessary processes and streamlining workflow.

Simon Bragg, analyst with ARC Advisory, said, "For certain industries, lean manufacturing is a great way to go. But with significant fluctuation in demand you need production line design and balancing tools. This lacks those tools but will work well for stable industries."

LMP enables items for customer orders to be automatically scheduled into production cells according to cell capacity and gives fulfilment dates for customers.

Single and multi-level backflushing of components and standard labour content are supported. Production reporting feeds through to shipping and invoicing. Supplier schedules can be updated from kanban scans. Streamlined purchase-to-order processing is supported.
