I have an unusual career history and have many diverse skills. I have worked for government organisations, provided consultancy services to charities and have helped several small firms establish themselves on the internet. At 37, I have business expertise, excellent web design and development skills, and can take a raw concept...

and turn it into a complete working business. I have even been an internet millionaire. I have been unemployed for more than four years. One either needs money, reams of paper qualifications, or both to get noticed by headhunters. How can I get into a reputable company, with a realistic salary and a workable career plan?

The solution: Prepare yourself with a career consultant

My advice would be to seek help from a professional career management consultant.

A consultant can decide with you what you want out of a career and, most importantly, work with you to help you achieve it.

They will start by assessing the key factors, including your core strengths, your needs from your career, your values and the influences surrounding the short- to long-term market.

With this in mind, they will identify viable options for you to pursue, and then you will choose the best option. They will prepare you for "launch", ie help prepare your CV, get you ready for interview and help you at every stage to get that career-building position.

A reputable career management consultant will have years of experience and be able to get you in front of headhunters and employers. You will have to be realistic about your needs and understand your position on the career ladder within your chosen field.
