The recent IT Matchmaker event, the first to bring London-based charities face-to-face with potential IT professional volunteer helpers, was a resounding success, resulting in a host of active projects.

Simon Davey, acting director of IT4Communities which organised IT Matchmaker, said Computer Weekly's support through these pages was a major factor in the success of the inaugural event.

IT4Communities is a national online initiative which aims to put charities that need IT help in touch with potential IT volunteers who feel the urge to give something back to their local communities.

In the week following our article, more than 50 IT professionals volunteered their skills to help charities and local communities. That takes the total number registered online since the launch of IT4Communities last November to about 650, with more than 200 charities and local community projects that are looking for IT help also registered.

The initiative is supported by several IT professional bodies, including the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists, Intellect (the main IT suppliers' trade association), the British Computer Society, Business in the Community and Citizens Online.

Following the success of the first IT Matchmaker event, Davey is planning several more in the near future.
