Log management plays an important role within the IT department. Best practice and compliance demands are paramount. Originally, logging was carried out through syslog, but searching the data was cumbersome and time-consuming. Astrium Satellites knew they could do a lot more with their log data, as well as track it far more efficiently. The syslog solution also didn’t allow for proactive reporting, and individual departments performed their own logging, as there was no way to manage the data centrally. IT managers had no choice but to manually trawl through a large number of logs, which could take days or weeks to complete. These constraints prevented the company from building a complete picture of log data across the infrastructure.
Additionally, the mix of different equipment meant that Astrium had multiple types of logging to do. They needed a centralised method for managing equipment generated data. Also, since the company is required to store historical data for the life of a satellite – up to 25 years – this creates huge storage requirements for log data.
