Former Virgin Atlantic IT chief takes up Wellcome Trust interim CIO role

David Bulman will be assisting the medical charity in the transition to a new CIO

Former Virgin Atlantic CIO David Bulman has joined The Wellcome Trust as interim CIO.

Bulman joined the medical charity in May 2015 following the departure of previous incumbent Mark Bramwell, who left in March 2015 to become IT director at Oxford University's Said Business School. Bramwell had been CIO at the trust for nearly nine years.

According to Bulman's LinkedIn profile, his mission will be "managing the technology function, reviewing the future of technology in the trust and assisting in a long-term management replacement for the [CIO] role".

Bulman left his previous position at Virgin Atlantic, where he had been working for just over three years, in February 2015. The executive has since been focusing on his management consultancy business.

Up to the start of 2015, the IT strategy at The Wellcome Trust had been focused on improving its underlying technology infrastructure, with improvements made in areas such as the organisation's network, storage and disaster recovery. The charity has also embraced bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policies and started to increase its use of cloud computing and software-as-a-service (SaaS) tools.
