CGI to provide government security vetting system

IT services supplier CGI is providing the UK government’s security vetting under a four-year contract

IT services supplier CGI has signed a four-year contract to provide the UK government’s security vetting service.

Since 2008, CGI has provided a vetting system to the Ministry of Defence (MoD), but it will now expand the service across most government departments through the National Security Vetting Solution (NSVS).

CGI has worked with Oracle on the system, which is based on the Cerberus application on an Oracle platform.

The system incorporates modern technology to streamline the vetting process and improve the user experience significantly, and replaces a range of disparate systems and manual processes.

The NSVS will handle more than 200,000 vetting requests a year. These will include checks on applicants' financial status, address verification and criminal records.

Applicants and vetting caseworkers will be able to securely access the system from different locations, using different devices.

Demand for security vetting from the government is currently rising by about 10% a year, and there are often surges in demand linked to major events.

CGI’s UK Security Operations Centre will monitor and protect NSVS against potential cyber security threats in real time and the service provider will provide secure hosting from its ISO/IES 27001-certified facilities in the UK.

Vince Groome, CIO for defence business services at the Ministry of Defence (MoD), said: “As we continue our drive for efficient and customer-focused processes, we are confident NSVS will provide a single solution with a modern, intuitive, scalable and effective approach to managing this critical security process.”

CGI, which is a Canadian IT and business process outsourcing company, acquired Anglo-Dutch Logica for £1.7bn in 2012. It has a strong public sector security business and provides IT security services to the satellite communications system used to manage European airspace, where it developed safety systems integration and IT security services to the project known as Iris Precursor.
