BBC launches Make it Digital 2015 education programme

BBC continues its IT education drive with launch of Make it Digital

The BBC has unveiled its 2015 education project Make it Digital, to encourage people into coding, programming and digital technology.

Outlining the initiative, project controller, Jessica Cecil, said Make it Digital will be the BBC’s major education project for 2015, following on from World War One in 2014.

Cecil said there will be new commissions, including dramas and documentaries, as well as online resources. She also said partnerships will be key to the programme's approach.

BBC director-general, Tony Hall, said: “I want the BBC to bring its creativity and energy to projects like this and make the digital world come alive for all audiences. We want to inspire a new generation to get creative with coding, programming and digital technology. It's exactly what the BBC should be doing.

“There will be something for everyone and we will work closely with the industry to help capture the spirit of what we did with the BBC Micro in the 1980s, but this time for the digital age."

Last week, BBC Children’s and BBC Learning unveiled education resources to coincide with the launch of the new computing curriculum in UK primary and secondary schools. The new content is available through CBBC, CBeebies and the Bitesize initiative through education resources, TV series, games and competitions.

Bitesize, from BBC Learning, will focus on using animation, graphics, video and interactive games for primary and secondary schools. CBBC will see the airing of Dick and Dom’s Appsolute Geniusan and the launch of Technobabble this autumn. CBeebies will have a new series of Nina and the Neurons: Go Digital, where Nina and her young Experimenters travel the UK in search of wonders of computer technology.
