Promoters said the initial focus will be on ways of measuring and maximising the return on design investment.

"Return on design investment continues to be a hot topic throughout the private sector, particularly among smaller businesses," said Antonia Ward, knowledge manager at the Design Council.

The site, which will offer independently written articles, whitepapers, comment and online debates, is designed to provide practical advice and best practice guidance to UK manufacturers.

"We identified the need for an independent resource aimed at manufacturing organisations that want to share their own experiences and learn from others," said Anne Busson, UK marketing manager for SolidWorks.

She said free membership would entitle members of the industry to download whitepapers, roundtable transcripts, and take part in forum debates.

"These live events will enable leading figures from UK design and manufacturing to discuss the topics the industry must face if it is to remain competitive in today's shrinking global market," said Busson.
