I have been working for the NHS as a systems admin/IT co-ordinator for the past three years and also as a freelance IT trainer for a company supplying general practice on a job-share agreement.

This is my first job since leaving university and I took it to get some experience, though I now feel that I am uninterested in what I am doing and would love to move on to something different.

I always liked the idea of project management, business analysis and change management. Is it worth me learning UML or getting a qualification in Prince2?

The solution: Consider a step that goes halfway

Your past experiences and objectives are well-matched and, indeed, there are roles out there that will allow you to move on. Maybe not in your first change of job, but if you look for a company that offers career progression you will achieve your goals sooner than you think.

Have you researched the potential of going into service management? You mention change management as one of your interests; were you involved with any aspect of service delivery while at the NHS? Developing these areas of expertise will enable you to be noticed by companies and agencies looking for service management candidates.

Looking for change management roles will be a good start. You will need an element of change management/IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) experience to be considered and must tailor your CV for these roles. Having the ability to coordinate change within an IT department and understanding the business benefits of change are key elements within change management.

I would certainly recommend you undertaking an ITIL foundation or Prince2 course.
