Microsoft releases Avalon code

Microsoft has released the raw code of its Avalon graphics presentation engine as part of a "community technology preview".

Microsoft has released the raw code of its Avalon graphics presentation engine as part of a "community technology preview".

Avalon is designed for developer use and allows them to make the most of Windows’ graphics capabilities.

The code released by Microsoft on its website will run on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.

Microsoft said the final version of Avalon will start shipping next year, and will form part of all future versions of Windows, including Longhorn, the next major version of the platform.
