The Houses of Parliament has installed a new computer firewall after a deluge of unsolicited "spam'' e-mails.

The Parliamentary Communications Directorate has told all recipients of Westminster e-mails, "Over the last couple of weeks we have had some intermittent problems which have caused delays to mail to external addressees. The problems were that our firewalls were overwhelmed by the extremely high volume of spam emails sent to Parliament and increased internal demands for internet browsing. We have now commissioned an additional firewall ... which is dedicated to deal with outbound emails. This, we expect, will expedite email delivery to external destinations."

Extra hardware is likely to be introduced to meet ever-increasing demands.
