SAP has announced that 70 customers are upgrading to its latest resource planning software, SAP R/3 Enterprise, with around 200 expected by the end of the year.

Both large corporations and small and medium-sized businesses will implement SAP R/3 Enterprise, the next release of SAP R/3, as part of a process designed to assure that implementation and support mechanisms are tested and in place before general release of the product in the first quarter of next year, the company announced at its Sapphire customer conference and trade show in Lisbon.

SAP R/3 Enterprise is based on a new Web services-compliant technology platform, the SAP Web Application Server (WAS), which is also part of the technology infrastructure for the mySAP.com range of e-business applications.

With SAP R/3 Enterprise, customers can extend their installations incrementally to incorporate mySAP.com services, thus protecting their investments in existing IT systems.

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), which is one of SAP's 70 customers implementing the latest version of its ERP (enterprise resource planning) software, plans to go live with the software within the next few months.
