A recent report on Web server software shows Apache continuing to dominate in the site hosting market, with Microsoft retaining a lead in the e-commerce sector, writes Matthew Burgess.
The August 2000 Netcraft Web Server Survey also brings good news for British firm Zeus Technologies, whose market share has leapt 60% in the last month
Commenting on the results, Netcraft director Mike Prettejohn said, "The main results are driven by the large hosting companies who deploy their chosen software over a large number of sites. The e-commerce market has a far higher percentage of sites that host their own servers, Microsoft's SiteServer puts them in a very strong position in this sector, mainly because its storefront system is easy to deploy."
RedHat's recent acquisition of C2Net (makers of StrongHold) and Web-based credit card company HKS should boost Apache's e-commerce prospects, especially if the company can make Apache as effective for e-commerce as it is for hosting.
