02 is to support Mapminder’s Mapaphone phone tracking service in the UK, giving more businesses the chance to track down their mobile workers and partners over mobile networks.
The service is already supported by Vodafone and Orange, and the addition of 02’s 13m customers means that businesses now have a more comprehensive “location-based service” to manage their logistics.
Mapaphone traces any permitted mobile by linking into the mobile operator’s network. Companies can check where employees are and when they are likely to arrive at their destinations, saving both time and money as a result of improved employee efficiency and customer service.
To use Mapaphone, companies must register at www.mapminder.co.uk, which gives them access to an on-line mapping system. It costs £2.95 a month (£7.95 a quarter, £24.95 a year) to register a business with Mapminder. It then costs £10 a year for each mobile phone registered on a business account, and 20p for each location enquiry made.
Companies must gain written consent from their employees agreeing to be tracked in the form of a signed, downloadable PDF form. If an employee chooses not to be tracked they can send an SMS message to Mapminder ending the tracking.
Accuracy of the tracking system is as high as within 100m in urban areas down to 2-3km in some rural parts.
Companies can also use the Mapminder site to send text messages to their employees for 7p a text, which is cheaper than most mobile operator SMS services.
