Students at the Royal Veterinary College's Live centre in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, are trialling smartphones running myPad software which enables them to take notes while working in the field.

Using Wi-fi or Orange 3G-enabled Orange SPV M3100 and M500 smartphones, the technology is enabling students to record and store their observations without the need for pen and paper.

The devices can also be used to display diagnostic images to help with recall of specific cases, as well as pulling up other useful resources.

The trial is expected to run until the summer.
