Virtualisation to aid desktop management

Cliff Saran

Altiris has released a software virtualisation product designed to simplify the management of desktop applications.

SVS (Software Virtualisation Solution) aims to reduce support costs and streamline software operations by providing faster, simpler deployment of desktop applications, the company said.

SVS separates the installation of an application's files and Windows registry configuration to allow the application to be installed and used without altering the base Windows operating system or conflicting with other applications. Multiple versions of the same application can also be run without conflict, said Altiris.

SVS places applications and data into units that can be managed based on business requirements. The software only affects how application files and registry settings are installed and not how they are run, preserving normal application supportability, functionality and behaviour.

Virtualising an application with SVS does not require  specialised training, Altiris said.
